Startup Tip: Have The Right Attitude To Succeed

Robert Scoble and I had a brief discussion on Twitter last night about Silicon Valley startups and why startups outside of Silicon Valley have less visibility and fewer success stories. Scoble says that the culture of Silicon Valley contributes to the success of startups based there. I agree. I’ll be talking about culture in many videos over the next few months, but today, I want to focus on one aspect of culture – attitude.

TED TALK: Dave Logan on tribal leadership

I want to share with you the people who have influenced me.

In August, I reviewed two books: Tribes (Seth Godin) and Tribal Leadership (Dave Logan et al.). If you are an entrepreneur thinking about a startup or already working on one – I highly recommend you read both books, especially Tribal Leadership. Here’s my earlier review. Tribal Leadership has had a profound impact on me – it, more than anything else, has made me a better leader.

Leave a comment and tell me why you want to read Tribal Leadership. I’ll send a free copy of Tribal Leadership to at least one person who comments.

Dave Logan, one of the authors of Tribal Leadership, recently gave a TED talk about Tribal Leadership. It’s a short 16 minute talk. You’ll be thankful that you watched it.

Startup Tip: Focus On Your Business, Not Your Title

It’s not uncommon, especially when there are multiple founders, to debate and even argue about titles. This typically happens very early in the life of a startup. Such arguments are both a waste of time and potentially lethal. They can destroy your startup. Focus on your business. Don’t worry about titles. Call everyone a co-founder and move on to more important issues. I explain why in this short 2 minute video.

Have you found creative ways to deal with titles on your team? Please share in the comments.

Startup Tip: You Must Have Passion To Succeed

Many people are excited by the idea of starting a company. Excitement about starting a company isn’t enough, however. You have to ask yourself whether you are excited about the general idea of a startup, or if you’re truly passionate about a specific idea. You must have passion about your idea to succeed. I discuss why in this 4 minute video.

Startup Tip: To Execute Your Strategy Successfully – Look At The Big Picture

Most entrepreneurs, startups and small businesses get so involved in day-to-day operations, that they forget to step back and look at the “big picture”. During the first six months after crowdSPRING launched, we too fell into this trap.

In this 3 minute video, I talk about why it’s important to take the time to evaluate the big picture.

Startup Tip: You’ll Make Lots of Mistakes. Don’t Obsess About Them.

Every entrepreneur and startup makes mistakes. Lots and lots of mistakes. Don’t obsess about making mistakes – that fear could and probably will paralyze you into inaction. But what should you do once you’ve made a mistake? Here are 5 tips:

To give you a perspective for how crowdSPRING dealt with a serious issue this past May when our website became unusable, I suggest you read my post about fessing up to our mistakes.
